Ralph Wahl, a founding member of the 4th Corner Fly Fishers (1972) of Bellingham, Washington, may have been the first man to cast a fly for Skagit River winter-run steelhead. "There may have been others but they weren't where I was fishing," Ralph says. Ralph was fishing for summer-run steelhead on the North Fork Stillaguamish whenever he could find the to break away from working at the family store (Wahl's Department Store) in Bellingham.  Ralph had been an obsessed fisherman all of his life.  When the run of Deer Creek natives would begin to stack up in the clear pools of the Stillaguamish below the town of Oso, so would Ralph and hosts of other dedicated steelhead anglers, club members among them.  Many of then would become life-long friends and, unbeknownst to them at the time, steelhead fishing legends. Besides being a passionate fly fisher he is known as a published photographer, fly tier, author, and businessman.

HOW TO TIE THE WALFLOWER

OLYMPIC PENINSULA FLY FISHERS

Fly Originator and History

The Wahlflower pattern is one of the best-known steelhead flies created by Ralph Wahl in 1965 who had been fishing for steelhead since the 1930's. Ralph was born in 1906 and passed away in 1996 at the age of 90.  Ralph became an avid steelhead fly fisherman when he discovered a secret pool (now known as the steelhead Shangri-La) on the Skagit River near Lyman. At this site he developed his passion for angling steelhead which lasted for 45 years. Ralph is best remembered for his outstanding fly fishing memoirs, books, and black-and-white outdoor photographs. -THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA FLY FISHERS WAHLFLOWER. Click the fly to see directions.
